Which one of these bizarre creatures and critters are you meeting for the first time? Here’s further proof that it’s a wild and wonderful world. Some of these animals seem like they’re characters from a Sci-Fi movie about Mars, others look like they’re from another dimension…but all of them are here on earth. Prepare to be blown away.

Bergamasco Shepherd

These herding dogs were bred for the freezing Alps and have evolved to possess thick dreaded coats. The entire dog is covered with an abundant coat that forms mats.

Frilled Shark

Seldom observed, the frilled shark may capture prey by bending its body and lunging forward like a snake. The long, extremely flexible jaws enable it to swallow prey whole, while its many rows of small, needle-like teeth make it difficult for the prey to escape.

Star Nosed Mole

The star-nosed mole is easily identified by the twenty-two pink fleshy appendages ringing its snout which is used as a touch organ with more than 25,000 minute sensory receptors, known as Eimer’s organs, with which this hamster-sized mole feels its way around. With the help of its Eimer’s organs, it may be perfectly poised to detect seismic wave vibrations.

The Blobfish

Perhaps it’s unfair to judge a fish out of water, but the blobfish looks more like a ball of slime than a living creature. Blobfish live deep in the ocean, where pressures are exceedingly high. In fact, the blobfish’s gelatinous appearance is actually a brilliant adaptation — its gooey, pudding-like flesh allows it to stay buoyant at depths where gaseous bladders can’t function.

Sarcastic Fringehead

The sarcastic fringehead (Neoclinus blanchardi) is a footlong fish that lives off the Pacific coast of North America. When unthreatened, the fringehead’s visage is fairly unremarkable. But if a marine predator (or stray human hand) attempts to dislodge a fringehead from its crevasse, the fish will race into action, brandishing its frightening Predator-like mouth at the interloper.

Chicken Turtle

The chicken turtle is similar in appearance to the eastern painted turtle (Chrysemys picta picta), but has an unusually long, striped neck that is close to the length of its shell, with a yellow stripe on both the forelegs and rear legs. It has webbed feet to help it swim. It has a distinguishable net-like pattern on its carapace.

The Panda Ant

The panda-ant may look cute, but its sting is painful! Technically not an ant but a wasp, its colors and patters are aposematic, warning other predators to stay away. Only the female is wingless, and despite sometimes being referred to as the “cow-killer ant,” its sting isn’t the most deadly or painful: this title belongs to a type of harvester ant that can kill a two-pound mammal with just six stings.

Leaf-Tailed Gecko

As their name suggests, leaf-tailed geckos are named after their broad, flat leaf-like tail which extends out between this lizard’s hind legs. Leaf-tailed geckos are also brown or green in colour and their skin is usually marked in such a way that it resembles tree bark. This gives the leaf-tailed gecko excellent camouflage when it is basking in the sun amongst the branches during the day.

The Living Rock

This bizarre sea creature called the Pyura Chilensis lives off the coast of Chile and Peru is often called a living rock or sea squirt. It is born a male before developing female organs which means it can breed with itself. The unusual mass of organs feeds on algae and microrganisms by inhaling them through seawater.

Chinese Water Deer

The Water Deer (Hydropotes inermis), also known as the vampire deer, is a small deer superficially more similar to a musk deer than a true deer. The males don’t have antlers but get long fangs instead.

Red-Lipped Batfish

This fish would make Darwin proud. In fact, the red-lipped batfish is named after him (Ogcocephalus darwini). This unusual fish has a lot of adaptations that make it look and act very un-fish-like. First, its pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins are modified in such a way that it can rest on the sea floor on them. In some cases, it can move on its pectoral and pelvic fins as if it was walking! The second major adaptation is the modified dorsal fin that resembles the lures of the closely related angler fishes.

Dumbo Oktopus

The most obvious characteristic of dumbo octopuses is their rounded ‘ears’ sticking out of the sides of their heads. No other kind of octopus has these and they are quite large so they look like elephant ears, in particular, the ears of the famous Disney character, Dumbo. That’s how they got their name.
