It took many tries and several months to take these shots -but the scenes are so overwhelming that it was really worth the effort. See the famous Neuschwanstein Castle from a spectacular bird’s-eye view.

While I hope you’ll enjoy this video, I feel I should place a little warning and reminder to all the other drone pilots out there, especially beginners and novices: Don’t try it! First of all, it’s impossible to find a suitable start or landing position without detailed knowledge of the castle’s surroundings. Second point: the airspace around Neuschwanstein castle is heavily crowded by sightseeing flights and paragliders. This is why you should never fly higher than the top edge of the castle, otherwise you would unnecessarily place others in danger.

Background Info

Neuschwanstein Castle is a nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as an homage to Richard Wagner. Ludwig paid for the palace out of his personal fortune and by means of extensive borrowing, rather than Bavarian public funds.

The palace was intended as a personal refuge for the reclusive king, but it was opened to the paying public immediately after his death in 1886. Since then more than 61 million people have visited Neuschwanstein Castle. More than 1.3 million people visit annually, with as many as 6,000 per day in the summer. The palace has appeared prominently in several movies and was the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle and later, similar structures.

My Drone Shots

Most of my aerial shots and videos are done from first-person view using Fatshark goggles and the DJI Phantom 2 V2 with the Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal. I am not a fan of the latest "once click" drones with all the built-in smartphone stuff. Digital video submission does not provide the same, smooth experience than analog 5.8GHz submission and suffers from a low framerate and a high latency - which is absolutely deadly for a pleasant FPV experience.

  2. Das Equipment ist gar nicht so spektakulär: DJI Phantom 1.1.1 mit CNC China Gimbal und einer Mobius HD Kamera :)

  3. Klasse! War grad am googlen was Schwanstein und die Genehmigungen angeht. Hast du super hinbekommen!
